Best tips for caring for your hacky sack

Why care matters

A neglected footbag goes flat, grimy, and unpredictable. A cleaned, well-stored bag holds shape and flight — and in a jam circle, a filthy sack is hard to ignore. A few habits beat buying a new one every season.

Match care to the material

  • Leather / faux leather — durable; avoid the washing machine. Damp cloth; occasional leather conditioner.
  • Cloth (cotton / synthetic) — easier to wash; wears faster outdoors.
  • Microfibre — soft and grippy; gentle hand wash keeps the hand-feel.
  • Crochet — beginner-friendly; lukewarm wash only so it does not shrink or warp.

Leather never goes in hot water. Cloth can often ride a laundry bag on a mild cycle. Skip heat-dry on radiators or blazing sun.

Cleaning without wrecking the fill

Frequency: weekly if you play asphalt or grass a lot; monthly for indoor casual use.

  • Light dirt → damp microfibre wipe
  • Heavier grime → hand wash, mild detergent
  • Odour → soak ~30 min in water + baking soda

Press gently — do not wring. Air-dry on a towel; reshape while damp if needed. No harsh chemicals, no boiling water.

Storage that keeps the round

Dry, ventilated, out of direct sun. Breathable cloth pouch — not sealed plastic (mould risk). Do not park the bag under heavy kit. Shake pellet- or bead-filled bags now and then so fill settles evenly. Regular light play also preserves shape better than months in a drawer.

Fill care and small repairs

Common fills: plastic pellets (light), sand (heavier control), metal granules (durable, less forgiving). If fill leaks or clumps, open carefully and refill with the same type so flight does not change. Patch tiny holes early with strong nylon thread in a matching colour — small tight stitches from the edge of the tear.

Complex shell or fill damage on a high-end bag may be worth a tailor or specialist. Footbag forums often have model-specific fixes.

Prevention beats sewing

  • Avoid sharp / abrasive surfaces
  • Skip aggressive deep-tread shoes that chew seams
  • Brush off dirt and dry moisture after outdoor sets
  • Rotate two bags if you train hard daily

A short warm-up of soft kicks also reduces angry, seam-ripping first contacts.

Care longer, play better

Clean, stored right, occasionally inspected — that is most of the job. Treat the bag like kit, not disposable trash, and it will stay ready for stalls and combos. Need a durable spare while one rests? See builds in our shop.
